The long-awaited return of HARMONY COLLEGE WEST is finally here!
We are thrilled to be holding our "Grand Re-Opening" featuring a STELLAR FACULTY, with some of the top coaches and teachers in the Society. There are thirty classes in the curriculum in a variety of schools: Arranging, Musicality, Performance, Quartet Development, Singing, Vocal Production, and even a Physical Conditioning class featuring Yoga techniques. Full-time students will enroll in eight subjects, and quartets can combine coaching sessions with a half-time course load. Quartets are also invited to sing on shows both Friday and Saturday.
All that, and ice cream, too! HARMONY COLLEGE WEST is sure to be an experience you will never forget!
Registration is separated into three "tracks" to make the registration process as simple as possible. The STUDENT TRACK is for full-time students who will choose eight (8) classes; the QUARTET TRACK allows quartets to combine quartet coaching with four (4) classes; the latter is further separated into MORNING (morning coaching, afternoon classes) and AFTERNOON (the reverse) sessions. You may enroll from one to four full-time students, but quartets must enroll all four members at the same time.
Class sizes are small and will be closed when they are full. We encourage you to enroll early!

Blair Brown
Blair Brown is a singer and performance coach based in Los Angeles, CA. In 2013, she earned a BA in Music from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she studied with Ambassadors of Harmony co-director, Dr. Jim Henry. In 2023 she was certified as a Performance Judge in the Barbershop Harmony Society.
Blair sings Lead with two-time BinG! World Mixed Quartet Champions, Double Date. Since their formation in 2012, Double Date has performed, taught, and coached throughout the US and around the world. They have recorded and produced two full-length albums and are working on their third. Their second album, Accentuate the Positive, produced CARA-award winning track, ‘Didn’t We’, which was awarded ‘Best Barbershop Song’ of 2018.
In 2019, Blair became the first woman elected to serve on the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Board of Directors. In addition to her passion for performing and coaching, Blair is an amateur chef and certified yoga instructor.
Johnny Bugarin
Johnny is a first generation barbershopper from Colorado. He certified in July of 2019 as a judge in the MUS category. Johnny had the pleasure of serving on the 2023 International Contest Panel. In his singing, he has a 5th place Youth Barbershop Quartet Contest medal with One n Dun in 2018, and is the baritone of the 2016 RMD champions The Pine, and was the baritone of the 2022 Dealers Choice Award winning quartet Windfall. He was previously the Assistant Director for the Sound of the Rockies chorus in Denver, the former director for the 52eighty Mixed Youth Chorus and the Longs Peak Chorus. He arranges and makes learning tracks for various ensembles. He enjoys working with quartets and choruses and helping them find effective and approachable rehearsal skills to better their musicianship and maximize their musical impact.
Chris Hébert
Chris received his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree from San Jose State University. He has been a voice instructor, studio musician and professional vocalist performing with the San Francisco and Oakland Symphonies.
Having joined the Barbershop Harmony Society in 1975 as a member of the Peninsulaires Chorus, he moved to the San Jose, California Garden City Chorus in 1987 and was their director from 1990 to 2004, leading them to the Far Western District chorus championship in 2002. He directed the Voices in Harmony Bay Area chapter from 2012 to 2017, taking them to the International chorus contest three times.
Chris is a BHS certified Singing Category Judge (30 years) and a two-time Singing Category Specialist from 2000-2003 and 2010-2012. As such, he is a highly sought-after coach for both BHS and Sweet Adeline quartets and choruses.
Melody Hine
Melody Hine has been singing barbershop in various quartets and choruses since she was 14. She earned her music education degree from the University of Georgia, and after that spent a year working for Disney World and Universal Studios. She then taught middle school chorus for seven years before beginning her master’s degree in Education Policy as well as her career as a full time arranger, coach and director.
Melody is proud to be a member of Harmony Incorporated, Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society. Her roles currently include certified BHS Music Judge and Musical Director of Parkside Melody, the upper voices ensemble of the Hershey Chapter of the BHS. She also sings baritone in the Song of Atlanta Show Chorus and Parkside Melody and was a member of the 2019 HI Harmony Queens, Hot Pursuit. Melody loves arranging and coaching groups of all levels, and she especially enjoys being a part of barbershop youth events.
Will Lagos
Will Lagos (he/him) is a Los Angeles based singer, actor, vocal arts educator, and acting coach with over 20 years of professional singing and acting experience. Will attended the University of Southern California’s School of Theater where he completed training in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting program. Will is an active barbershop singer, certified Performance Judge, and currently serves as Music & Performance Director of international barbershop chorus champions The Westminster Chorus. A sought-after clinician and coach, Will has worked with choruses like Central Standard, Vocal Standard, Toronto Northern Lights, and Parkside Melody, and with quartets like The Ladies, GQ, and The Newfangled Four. Will also teaches barbershop performance and singing technique while on faculty at Harmony University and Harmony Colleges both in the states and abroad. A sharp ear can hear Will as a vocalist on film scores, international albums, children’s music education materials, and even croaking out alien drinking songs at Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland and Disney World. Will is also a founding member of Public Assembly, a Los Angeles based theater company and arts collective premiering new works in repertory every month. Will currently serves on the faculty at the California School of the Arts - San Gabriel Valley, where he teaches musical theater repertory & technique, vocal arts, scene study, and theater history.
Shawn Mondragon
Shawn Mondragon is a Performance Judge out of the Rocky Mountain District, where he has been a member of BHS for over 40 years!
He has been an official judge since since 2013, and is a sought after coach for quartets, and choruses, all over the country. He has been on staff as a teacher at Harmony University Northwest, BHS Harmony University, as well as other district Mini HEP schools. He is a perennial Performance teacher with classes being offered at the BHS International Summer contests in July, as well as Midwinter contests in January.
He has been a member of the "New Mexi-Chords", and a founding member of the "Duke City Sound" in Albuquerque. He has sung Lead in three Rocky Mountain District Quartet Champions: "Distinction" (2000), "the Summit" (2007), and "Blue Steele" (2015). His RMD 2007 champion quartet, "the Summit", was also the FINAL "Buckeye Invitational" Quartet Champion in 2007. Shawn has sung with several of his quartets, and choruses on the International stage, and recently competed in the 2024 International Seniors Quartet Championship in New York City, where his quartet, "Sophisticated Gentlemen", recieved a 4th place Bronze medal. He is currently serving on the RMD board as a VP of Marketing, and was a previous VP of Music and Performance.
When Shawn is not coaching or judging, he can be heard on the air in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he is currently the #1 Radio Personality on the morning drive shift as "Chaz Malibu", on KABG BIG 98.5 FM (listen to him anywhere in the world at www.big985.com)! He has been an on-air radio personality for over 40 years!
Laura Pallas Singer
Laura is an accomplished musician, performer, vocal coach and vocal production specialist. She has been the Musical Director of the Santa Monica Chorus for over 30 years. She joined the chorus soon after earning her M.F.A. in Vocal Performance. In 2009, she was awarded the title of Master Director by Sweet Adelines International in recognition of Santa Monica’s achievement as a high-scoring chorus. Laura has been instrumental in bringing the chorus to its current status as a four-time Regional Champion and a top-18th finalist among 2022 Sweet Adelines International choruses. Laura is also an accomplished quartet competitor, having won regional quartet championships with her quartets "West Side Story" and "Naturally” and in 2022 earned a wild card slot to compete in the international contest in Phoenix. Laura is a regular vocal education instructor for Region 11 and regularly coaches quartets and other choruses in the Region and around the country. She is a member of the Region 11 Winner's Circle, members of which are all past regional quartet champions. In 2017, she was awarded the prestigious Noteworthy Award for her distinguished and dedicated services to the Region. Outside of her Sweet Adelines career, Laura has worked in various industries as a human resources expert. Her love of people and for musical excellence has been a cornerstone for Laura’s coaching and teaching goals. Laura is an inspiring teacher!
Dusty Schleier
Dusty joined the Barbershop Harmony Society in 1989. He is a second-generation barbershop singer, and "grew up" performing with the 3-time International champion Phoenicians chorus.
He has been the Director of the Music City Chorus since 2012 and has led them to multiple International medalist performances including the International Championship in 2022. As a quartet singer, Dusty is a 4-time International Finalist singing baritone in TNS and has won three district quartet championships.
Dusty is an active coach for choruses and quartets around the world, a certified performance judge and has been a faculty member at Harmony University for over 10 years. He is employed by the Barbershop Harmony Society as the Director of Meetings & Conventions. Dusty resides in Smyrna, Tennessee, with his wife, Erica, and daughter, Scarlett.
Steve Scott
Steve Scott is a music educator for the Barbershop Harmony Society where he creates and curates educational material and music collections. A barbershopper for over thirty years, Steve taught voice and choir at the college level before joining the BHS staff. His research interests include the biophysiology of the singing voice, acoustics, and barbershop history. He is a certified Singing judge, a frequent faculty member for harmony colleges around the world where he teaches voice techniques and vocal pedagogy and is a clinician, voice teacher, and coach. Steve also serves as the assistant director and principal vocal coach of the 2022 international champion chorus, the Music City Chorus, in Nashville TN. He enjoys living in the Nashville area with his wife and two children.
Gary Steinkamp
Gary is a lifetime member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and has been singing and teaching Barbershop music for over 54 years. In addition to being one of the music leaders of A Cappella Syndicate, Gary also served as Musical Director for the Spirit of Phoenix Chorus for 5 years, Music and Artistic Director of the Tokyo Barber (a Barbershop Chorus in Tokyo) for 11 years, Director of the Pride of Phoenix chorus and Director of the Phoenicians - International Chorus Champions for 10 years.
He is a 3-time District Quartet Champion and an International 3rd place medalist of the quartet Standing Room Only. He is a long-time member of the Harmony University faculty of the Barbershop Harmony Society in Nashville, TN. He served on the Barbershop Harmony Society's Future II Committee and was a member of the Far Western District Chorus Director's Guild. Gary is a Certified Judge of 20 years, and is the current Category Specialist for the Performance Category and continues to coach choruses and quartets all over the world in the Barber Shop style.
Of his fondest barbershop memories are the years he spent singing with his Dad in a comedy quartet, Music Appreciation 101, and more recently with his pals, Sprout, Tinker and Mulligan in The Associates.
Theresa Weatherbee
Theresa Weatherbee is a forty-two-year member of Harmony, Inc and a twenty-five-year judge in the Performance Category. She currently serves Harmony, Inc. as the Performance Category Specialist and a was one of the first women to certify as a Performance Judge in the Barbershop Harmony Society. Theresa is also an active member of Sweet Adelines, currently singing with her hometown chorus. And she additionally travels around the USA performing with a premier a cappella ensemble called “Vocal Moxie’.
Theresa brings the world of theater training and stage experience into her coaching sessions, helping performers discover and develop their own stage personality while enriching their total performance experience.
Theresa is dedicated to coaching all types of performers who want to take their already existing performance skills to new heights and learn how to achieve believability through continued education and development. She has taught, guided, and mentored throughout many countries including North America, Europe, Russia, and New Zealand.
Known for her "all-consuming passion" for the stage, Theresa’s specialty is inspiring performers to own the stage. She has had over forty years on the stage as a singer and actor, and her work also has been in front of the camera as a background actor in movies and TV productions.

About The Summertimers Harmony Band
The Summertimers Harmony Band is a barbershop quartet known for their bright vocal harmonies and electrifying performances. Formed in 2019, the Band is known for their original tunes and fresh arrangements of classic songs by up-and-coming arrangers.
Their infectious enthusiasm and dedication to the art of barbershop music paid off in their 2022 FWD Quartet Championship and their International Contest debut in Cleveland this summer.

Arranging with the Performer in Mind
How to arrange in a way that highlights both the strengths and the personality of the performing ensemble.
Goal: To be able to listen to an ensemble and identify ways in which their strengths and personality would influence your arranging approach.
Prerequisite: None, but you will probably get the most out of this course if you have some arranging experience.

You don’t have to mark all your music… just the music you want to sing well! This class helps to direct singers in the basics of how to mark music for musical cues that will help them sing better.

Understanding 'Development' and how arrangers think
Examine arrangements and look at how the arranger highlighted differences between sections of the music. This gives performers a roadmap on how to approach performing any given song. We highlight examples that show good development, and others that show a lack of development.

How to be a Great Lead
As Leads, we carry the bulk of the responsibility for storytelling, so in this course we’ll work to discover students’ unique storytelling voices and empower those voices to shine. We’ll explore the Lead’s role within the quartet, identify the traits which define a great Lead, and develop those traits through discussion and workshopping.

Integrating Performance into Rehearsals
We will explore the philosophy of performance coaching, how to develop and maintain performance standards in your ensemble and integrating performance coaching with singing and musical plans. This class is for leaders and coaches who feel their strengths are not in the area of performance. How often do we get a chance to rehearse performance skills during rehearsal? Not enough! Which is why in this class, you will learn how to integrate powerful performance techniques into your rehearsal.

Imagine your performance at the highest level of entertainment as you have learned the skills necessary to be one of the best. The Singing Actor takes a new look at Barbershop's performance skills in relation to the real world of performance.

Students will take text from barbershop songs both old and new and apply to them the same type of textual analysis that career actors and performers utilizing when creating monologue performance pieces. Students will learn textual approaches from the great acting coaches of the twentieth century!

Yoga for Singers
Singing is a full body activity! In this course, we’ll use the tools of traditional yoga to awaken our bodies and minds for a more engaged and aware singing experience. We’ll briefly explore the history of Yoga and walk through some simple yoga-based physical warm ups students can take back to utilize before singing sessions at home or with their singing ensembles.

Rehearsal Under Glass: How we work together
Do you find your quartet rehearsals often go the same way and are looking for new ideas to improve? We will break down how we approach warmups, singing, music, performance rehearsal as well as how we have evolved our tactics over time to overcome certain plateaus we encountered. Successful Quarteting: How to win a district championship
Are you interested in competing with your quartet but are still trying to understand what is rewarded in competition? Are you in a quartet but still trying to define ‘who’ you are as a group or what your ‘style’ should be? Are you looking for help overcoming logistical blockers to regular rehearsals? Are you finding that the preferences and priorities are conflicting within your quartet? Do you just want to know more about the chronological journey of milestones that led to The Summertimers Harmony Band realizing the FWD District championship? If you answered YES to any of these questions, please join us for this class on competing at the district level and we will share our tips and tricks for how to stand out and ‘crack the code’ of succeeding in competition. Personal Vocal Improvement
Maybe you're singing in a quartet and would like to feel relaxed vocally? Maybe you'd just like to have a target to aim for, so that you feel you're being consistent in the way you use your voice during rehearsals and/or performances and not getting vocally tired? Volunteers will have an opportunity to have some individual vocal coaching during this session, that will enable you to make best and appropriate use of your voice in the future.
